Steve Fisher

Steve Fisher has long been captivated by the natural world. Growing up in Rhinelander, Wisconsin, he spent countless hours exploring the outdoors. He pursued higher education at the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire, earning both bachelor's and master's degrees in English. Steve then dedicated over three decades to teaching English in public schools, beginning his career in Green Bay and later moving to Wausau, Wisconsin.

Upon retirement, Steve forged a direct connection with the Raptor Education Group, Inc. (REGI), an association that remains active. As a volunteer, he has been instrumental in assisting with and delivering educational programs about raptors, often holding REGI’s education birds on the glove. His commitment extended to a staff position at REGI for several years, during which he rescued and transported hundreds of injured and sick raptors and other birds for expert care. Currently, Steve serves as a member of the REGI Board of Directors and continues, alongside his wife, to volunteer in rescuing and transporting sick and injured birds when needed.

In addition to their work with REGI, Steve and his wife actively participate in avian-related citizen science programs. These include Cornell University's Project FeederWatch, the Wintering Golden Eagle Survey coordinated by the National Eagle Center in Wabasha, MN, Bald Eagle Nest Watch, Snapshot Wisconsin (a trail camera monitoring program by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources), and Christmas Bird Counts.

Conservation and an appreciation for nature's wonders have always been central to Steve's life. Whether observing coastal Brown Bears catching salmon along remote Alaskan beaches, watching Polar Bears on the sea ice in Svalbard, Norway, photographing bison, wolves, and Grizzly Bears foraging in Yellowstone National Park, or simply listening to Hermit Thrushes and Black-throated Green Warblers near their northern Wisconsin cabin, Steve finds immense joy in the great outdoors.
