Bald Eagle Post Release Study
Young bald eagle with radio transmitter. The transmitter falls off in one year. This process helps us access our rehabilitation methods and success rate particularly of those chicks--like the one pictured that came into rehab very young and was foster parent raised in a captive environment. She was released and continues to do very well in the wild.

We are very excited as we enter our second year of post release studys on Bald Eagles. The project is a cooperative project with Ferry Bluff Eagle Council/International Crane Foundation/Raptor Education Group, Inc. The birds released in 2001 all did very well. The adult female headed back to her native territory near Crandon,WI in February and was noted at the traditional nest site on Lake Metonga this summer. The immature birds both did very well as well. Both fed well and interacted with eagles of all age categories. The birds helped researchers to locate several more roost sites on the WIsconsin River.

The first releases of this second season are set for Dec 13th 2001 in Sauk City. The tranmitters have been placed on the birds and they are presently getting preparing for their big day.

A second release will be on January 19th 2002 during Sauck City Eagle Days celebration.

This project has provided us good scientific evidence as to how our young birds do after they leave rehabilitation and are on their own.

(Many thanks to Spence Porter of Communication Specialist, Orange, CA for supplying the transmiters for the rehabilitated birds.)
