A miraculous recovery for sandhill crane - April 2009
by Teresa Mackin WAOW Channel 9 News.
WISCONSIN RAPIDS (WAOW) -- A sandhill crane is flying free months after she was almost killed.
It's what rescuers are calling a miraculous recovery.
It all started in September, when 11-year-old Monica Schaetz found the injured bird in a stream near Wisconsin Rapids. it had been shot with an arrow.
Monica's mom called the Raptor Education Group, who worked to nurse the bird back to health.
Marge Gibson, with the Raptor Education Group, says, "She was very very weak, and had a horrible infection at the injury site. I don't think she would have lived more than a couple days."
But this miracle crane proved them wrong. In front of dozens of people, she was released into the wild: flying.
But the miracle doesn't end there. Cranes mate for life. When she was rescued, she left her mate and a baby behind.
Gibson added, "I'm sure that's the last he thought he would see of her."
But, heading out of the box, she flew toward a welcoming committee. Her mate and her youngster had come back.
Gibson said, "To be able to see her go home, that's why we do the work."
